Doctor Mark Hyman is one of the most prominent figures in functional medicine. He has written many books and is a well-known, best-selling author on the New York Times list. He is a popular YouTuber with

Each of his publications and podcasts illustrates how proper nutrition and lifestyle can treat the causes of chronic diseases. He's a qualified physician. He prefers to treat the causes of illness rather than the symptoms. He has many criticisms of the current healthcare system, particularly in America. He advocates for addressing the underlying imbalances in the body rather than targeting specific measurements such as blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.

His goal is for everybody to achieve optimum health using a combination of diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. His work is straightforward relative to some of the other experts', and I love that it gives actionable steps to improve health. Rather than pushing supplements, he supports eating whole, nutritious foods and avoiding sugar and processed foods.

Doctor Hyman's work is very relatable, and unlike some of the other functional medicine experts, after reading his work, you're left with some practical advice that you can apply to your life. Others can sometimes motivate but confuse me. He gives easy step-by-step instructions on how to eat nutritious food and avoid processed foods, particularly sugar. He also goes in two ways: to use regular exercise and what training plans work for people, how to manage stress; and one of his key points is how to get enough sleep and why it matters so much.

The four blockbuster books he has" written alongside other excellent books, numerous podcasts, and a platter of articles, are

The blood sugar solution

This book provides a clear and easy plan to balance blood sugars and prevent or reverse type 2 diabetes. Dr Hyman explains and details how to use whole foods and plant-based diets alongside regular exercise to improve health and manage this illness.

Food, what the heck should I eat?

If you ever need a complete guide to healthy eating, this book is for you. Doctor Hyman breaks down the various food groups and explains which ones are good for your health and what should be avoided. Like many functional medicines experts, he recommends against using the food pyramid, which is now largely discredited.

The ultra-mind solution

This book examines how "what you eat is connected to your brain and body" and, more importantly, how a bad diet can lead to mental and physical health issues. It provides an excellent plan for optimising brain health through nutritious diet supplements and lifestyle changes.

The Pegan Diet

This book shows how you can combine paleo and vegan diets to reduce inflammation and balance blood sugars. Unexpectedly, the book recommends limiting processed sugary and dairy foods and promoting a more nutritious natural diet. It is well worth reading (or listening) to any autoimmune illnesses.
