SPF Suncream
SPF suncream is essential for daily skin protection. It guards against harmful UVA and UVB rays, helping to prevent sunburn, premature ageing, and skin damage. What does SPF mean in suncream?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a suncream protects the skin from UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn. For example, SPF 30 means it would take 30 times longer for your skin to redden compared to no protection. However, no suncream blocks 100% of UV rays. SPF 30 filters out about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%.
Why is broad-spectrum suncream important?
Broad-spectrum suncream protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays cause sunburn, while UVA rays penetrate deeper, leading to premature ageing and increasing the risk of skin cancer. Using a broad-spectrum suncream ensures comprehensive protection, reducing the likelihood of sun-induced skin damage.
How much SPF suncream should I apply?
For effective protection, apply about a teaspoon (5ml) of suncream to your face and neck. For the entire body, adults should use approximately 35ml, or seven teaspoons. It's crucial to apply suncream 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to bind properly to the skin.
