Insect Repellants

Insect repellents help protect against bites from mosquitoes, midges, and other insects. They work by masking body odours or using active ingredients that deter insects. Whether you're travelling, hiking, or spending time outdoors, using a good repellent can prevent itching, irritation, and the risk of insect-borne diseases. Repellents come in sprays, lotions, wipes, and roll-ons, with options for all ages and skin types. Choosing the right one depends on where you're going and how long you'll be exposed. A strong repellent with DEET or picaridin is ideal for high-risk areas, while natural alternatives suit milder conditions.

Absolute Aromas Citronella is a steam-distilled essential oil obtained from the leaves of Cymbopogon nardus. It has a sharp, lemony aroma with grassy, slightly smoky undertones. This essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy for its fresh, functional character and is commonly chosen for outdo..

How do insect repellents work?

Insect repellents work by creating a barrier that makes it harder for insects to detect your skin. Mosquitoes and midges are drawn to body heat, carbon dioxide, and skin scents. Repellents contain active ingredients like DEET, picaridin, or natural oils that interfere with an insect’s ability to find you. Some repellents work by masking human scents, while others create an unpleasant environment that insects avoid.

What is the best insect repellent for mosquitoes?

For the best protection against mosquitoes, use a repellent with DEET, picaridin, or IR3535. DEET-based products are highly effective and provide long-lasting defence, making them ideal for high-risk areas. Picaridin offers similar protection but is odourless and less greasy. Natural repellents with lemon eucalyptus oil can also help but may need frequent reapplication. If you're travelling to a mosquito-heavy region, choose a repellent with at least 20-50 percent DEET for maximum protection.

Are natural insect repellents effective?

Natural insect repellents can offer some protection but may not be as long-lasting as synthetic options. Ingredients like citronella, lemon eucalyptus, and tea tree oil help deter insects, but they require frequent reapplication. While natural repellents are suitable for short-term use or low-risk areas, they may not be strong enough in places with a high insect population.
