What causes diarrhoea?
Diarrhoea can be caused by a number of things. Infections from bacteria, viruses or parasites are the most common. These can come from undercooked food, dirty water or contact with someone who’s unwell. Food intolerances like lactose or gluten sensitivity may also trigger symptoms. Some medicines, especially antibiotics, can upset the balance in your gut. Stress, anxiety or other health conditions like IBS or coeliac disease may also lead to diarrhoea.
How do I treat diarrhoea at home?
You can treat diarrhoea at home by staying hydrated and using over-the-counter medicine. Drink plenty of fluids—water, clear soups or oral rehydration salts help replace what’s lost. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and dairy until your stomach settles. Eat small meals made up of plain foods like rice, toast or bananas. Medicines like loperamide can help slow things down and reduce urgency.
When should I see a doctor for diarrhoea?
You should see a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than two or three days, especially if there’s blood in your stool or signs of dehydration like dizziness or dry mouth. If you have a fever, strong stomach pain or can’t keep any fluids down, medical help is needed.
