What are piles and what causes them?
Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, are swollen veins in or around the bottom (anus or rectum). They can develop inside the rectum (internal piles) or under the skin around the anus (external piles). The main causes include straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, pregnancy, heavy lifting, and sitting for long periods.
Can I treat piles at home?
Yes, many people manage piles effectively at home. Over-the-counter treatments such as creams, ointments, or suppositories help reduce swelling, soothe pain, and ease itching. Warm baths can calm discomfort. Increasing your fibre intake, drinking more water, and avoiding straining during bowel movements are key changes that can speed recovery and stop piles returning.
Are piles contagious or dangerous?
No, piles are not contagious. You can’t catch them from someone else or spread them. They're caused by physical strain or pressure, not by bacteria or viruses. Although they’re uncomfortable and sometimes distressing, they’re rarely dangerous.
