Childhood Rashes
Childhood rashes are one of the most common skin concerns for parents. These skin reactions often appear suddenly and can cause worry, but most are harmless and treatable. From nappy rash to heat rash, or more stubborn conditions like eczema, recognising the cause is the first step in soothing your child’s skin. Our childhood rash treatments are carefully selected by pharmacists to support healing, reduce irritation, and protect young, delicate skin.
What causes childhood rashes?
Childhood rashes can be triggered by a number of things including viral infections, allergic reactions, heat, or friction. Some of the most common causes are conditions like chickenpox, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, eczema, nappy rash, or contact dermatitis. In many cases, a rash is the body’s natural reaction to something external or internal, like a new detergent or a mild viral illness. Most rashes are not serious and clear up on their own. However, if a rash is persistent, very itchy, or comes with other symptoms like a fever or swelling, it’s best to speak to a pharmacist or GP for advice.
When should I be worried about a rash on my child?
You should get urgent medical advice if your child has a rash that does not fade under a glass (the 'glass test'), or if it's accompanied by symptoms like a high fever, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or swelling. Also, if your child seems very unwell or is in a lot of discomfort, seek help.
What’s the best cream for treating common childhood rashes?
The best cream depends on the type of rash. For dry, itchy skin or eczema, look for moisturising emollients that rebuild the skin barrier. For inflamed or sore rashes like nappy rash, zinc oxide-based creams help create a barrier and soothe irritation.
