MAG365 Ionic Magnesium Citrate is a powder supplement that contains up to 375mg of elemental magnesium per 4g serving (100% of the EU Nutrient Reference Value).
A rounded teaspoon is mixed into hot water, which triggers a fizzing reaction that converts magnesium carbonate and citric acid into ionic magnesium citrate.
Drunk as a warm drink, it absorbs faster and more completely than most tablet and capsule magnesium supplements.
MAG365 is developed by ITL Health, an Irish company, and is suitable for vegans.
Ionic Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms of magnesium.
A randomised crossover trial by Lindberg et al. (2017, BMC Nutrition) measured significantly higher serum and urinary magnesium from citrate compared to oxide, the cheapest form.
Magnesium oxide has a bioavailability of roughly 4% according to Firoz and Graber (2001, Magnesium Research), meaning most of what is swallowed is not absorbed.
Citrate is several times better absorbed and is well tolerated at normal doses.
What makes MAG365 different from capsule magnesium citrate is the ionic delivery. The powder is magnesium carbonate and citric acid. Hot water drives a reaction that releases the magnesium as a free ion, ready for the gut to absorb. There is no tablet to break down, no capsule to dissolve, and no binders or fillers required to compress it into a solid dose.
Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency
The EU Nutrient Reference Value for magnesium is 375mg per day. Subclinical magnesium deficiency is estimated to affect ten to thirty percent of the Western population (DiNicolantonio et al., 2018).
Modern diets are short of magnesium because processing strips it out of refined grains and soil depletion has reduced the magnesium content of crops.
On top of that, caffeine increases urinary magnesium excretion, alcohol impairs absorption, and chronic stress accelerates magnesium loss.
The symptoms of low magnesium are the everyday complaints most adults put up with: tiredness, poor sleep, muscle cramps, headaches, irritability and difficulty concentrating.
How Magnesium Helps Your Body
Magnesium helps with
- a reduction of tiredness and fatigue,
- normal energy-yielding metabolism,
- normal functioning of the nervous system,
- normal muscle function,
- normal psychological function,
- normal protein synthesis,
- the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and
- electrolyte balance.
These are EFSA-approved claims, not marketing language.
MAG365 for Sleep, Stress & Muscles
Magnesium is one of the most-searched supplements in Ireland for sleep, and with good reason. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and normal functioning of the nervous system.
A 2024 systematic review (Nutrients) found that five out of seven studies on magnesium supplementation reported improvements in anxiety-related outcomes.
For muscle cramps, magnesium is part of the contraction and relaxation cycle; for tension and recovery after exercise, it is one of the first things sports physiologists recommend.
For people who lie awake at 3 am, whose minds race at bedtime, or whose calves cramp at night, MAG365 is a sensible starting point.
It is also widely used by people who drink a lot of coffee, work shifts, train regularly or live with ongoing low-grade stress.
How Magnesium Citrate works
It works through a few key pathways rather than doing just one thing.
Absorption and availability
Magnesium citrate is bound to citric acid, which keeps it soluble in the gut. That means it’s absorbed more efficiently than heavier forms like oxide, so you actually raise your magnesium levels rather than just passing it through.
Muscle and nerve function
Magnesium controls how calcium moves in and out of muscle cells. Calcium triggers contraction, magnesium allows relaxation. When levels are low, muscles stay tight and reactive and when you top it up, things loosen, cramps ease, and tension drops.
Energy production
Magnesium is needed to produce ATP, the energy source your cells run on. It acts as a cofactor in hundreds of reactions linked to energy, so improving levels can help reduce fatigue and that run-down feeling.
Nervous system calming
Magnesium increases GABA activity, your brain’s main calming
pathway, which helps take the edge off feeling wired or stressed.
That said, citrate is not the most calming form. If sleep or anxiety is the main issue, magnesium bisglycinate or glycinate are better choices, as they have a more direct calming effect on the nervous system.
Gut effect (what makes citrate different)
Magnesium citrate pulls water into the bowel. This softens stool (pooh)and triggers a bowel movement. This makes useful when digestion is sluggish, you are constipated or have bloating, wind or IBS.
Electrolyte balance
Magnesium helps regulate electrolytes like calcium and
potassium, keeping muscle contractions, nerve signals, and hydration in
balance.
Different types of magnesium
- Citrate is used for magnesium deficiency and digestion. It
works quickly and can help move the gut. Also helps muscles and stress a little.
- Bisglycinate or glycinate is best for sleep, stress and
calming the nervous system. Also helps with muscle relaxation (great for post
workout muscle tightness) and bones.
- Malate is suited to energy production and muscle fatigue.
Also helps general magnesium levels, but not for sleep.
- Threonate is linked to brain function, focus and memory.
Also supports overall magnesium levels, but not for muscles or gut.
- Taurate is used for heart health and nervous system balance.
Also helps stress, but not for gut or sleep.
- Oxide is mainly used as a laxative and is poorly absorbed.
Limited benefit beyond gut use.
Why Powder MAG365 is Special
Up to 375mg of elemental magnesium per 4g serving, which is 100% of the EU Nutrient Reference Value.
No binders, fillers, added sugar, gluten, soy, yeast, dairy, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.
Flavoured options use natural flavours and stevia. Unflavoured is neutral and mixes into other drinks.
MAG365 Single-Serve Sachets are the travel and on-the-go version of Ireland's best-known ionic magnesium citrate powder. Each sachet is a pre-measured 2.5g serving of magnesium carbonate and citric acid. Tear, pour into a cup of hot water, wait for the fizz, and drink.
Starting dose: 2g (one level teaspoon) in 60ml of hot water once daily for the first few days.
Typical daily dose: 4g (one rounded teaspoon) once a day, or 2g twice a day.
Wait about 30 seconds after adding hot water for the fizz to settle, then top up with cool water or a splash of juice and drink.
Can be taken with or without food. If you take it with food, it is gentler on the stomach if you are sensitive.
Do not use boiling water. Freshly boiled water left to cool for a minute is ideal.
Best Time to Take MAG365 Magnesium
The best time depends on why you are taking it.
- For sleep and relaxation, take a dose 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- For daytime energy, muscle function or migraine prevention, take it with breakfast or lunch.
- If you use the full 4g daily dose, splitting it into a morning 2g and an evening 2g is often more comfortable than one large serving.
Consistency over weeks matters more than exact timing, so pick a time you will actually remember every day.
How Long for MAG365 to Work
Some effects show up quickly, others build over weeks.
- Sleep and muscle cramps often settle within the first one to two weeks of consistent daily use.
- Stress, mood and daytime energy typically respond over two to four weeks.
If you are taking MAG365 to raise overall magnesium status, give it at least four to six weeks of daily use before judging the result.
Individual response depends on how depleted your starting magnesium status is, your diet, and whether you drink a lot of coffee or alcohol.
Supplements to Take with MAG365
- Vitamin B6: enhances cellular magnesium uptake and contributes to normal nervous system function.
- Vitamin D3: Magnesium is required to activate vitamin D. Taking vitamin D without enough magnesium is less effective. Especially relevant in winter in Ireland.
- Vitamin K2 as MK-7: goes with D3 for bone health. Consider MAG365 Bone Formula if you want these in one drink.
- Calcium: the usual 2:1 calcium-to-magnesium ratio is a general guide. If you are focused on bone density, MAG365 BF+ adds calcium directly.
- Omega-3: complements magnesium for cardiovascular and joint health.
- L-theanine or ashwagandha: help magnesium for stress-related sleep.
FAQs: MAG365 Magnesium Citrate
What form of magnesium is in MAG365?
Ionic magnesium citrate is produced when the powder is mixed with hot water. Magnesium carbonate reacts with citric acid to release the magnesium as a free ion, which is absorbed efficiently across the gut lining.
How much elemental magnesium does MAG365 give per serving?
A 4g serving (a rounded teaspoon) provides up to 375mg of elemental magnesium, which is 100% of the EU Nutrient Reference Value. A starter dose of 2g (one teaspoon) provides around 187.5mg.
Which is better, MAG365 or magnesium oxide?
For raising magnesium levels in your body, MAG365 is significantly better. Magnesium citrate is several times more bioavailable than oxide (Lindberg et al., 2017). Oxide has its uses for occasional constipation, but for energy, sleep and muscle function, a well-absorbed citrate is the better choice.
Does MAG365 cause loose stools?
Magnesium citrate has a mild osmotic effect at higher doses. Most people tolerate 2 to 4g per day well. If your bowels loosen, reduce the dose and build up over one to two weeks.
How is MAG365 different from MAG365 Bone Formula (BF)?
Standard MAG365 is magnesium only. MAG365 Bone Formula adds vitamin D3, vitamin K2 as MK-7, vitamin B6, vitamin C, zinc, boron and potassium for bone and heart health. Choose standard MAG365 if you already take a multivitamin or only want magnesium. Choose Bone Formula if you want the bone-building co-factors in one drink.
Can I take MAG365 if I am on blood pressure medication?
Magnesium helps with normal blood pressure and can interact with some medications. Speak to your pharmacist or GP before starting if you are on anti-hypertensive, diuretic or kidney-related medication.
Is MAG365 suitable during pregnancy?
Magnesium is commonly used in pregnancy, particularly for leg cramps. Check with your pharmacist or GP before starting any new supplement during pregnancy.
Do I need to use hot water, or can I use cold?
Hot water is what drives the reaction between citric acid and magnesium carbonate, producing ionic magnesium citrate and a visible fizz. Cold water gives a less complete reaction. Use freshly boiled water left to cool for a minute.
MAG365 Side Effects
MAG365 is well-tolerated at recommended doses. The main side effect is loose stools, which usually settle by reducing the dose or splitting it across the day.
MAG365 Drug interactions
- Antibiotics: magnesium can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin. Separate by at least two hours.
- Bisphosphonates for osteoporosis: magnesium reduces absorption. Take them first thing in the morning and leave at least two hours before MAG365.
- Thyroid medication (levothyroxine): separate by at least four hours.
- Diuretics, proton pump inhibitors and some diabetes medications affect magnesium levels. Speak to your pharmacist if you are on any of these.
FYI: Mag365 Magnesium Citrate
- Kidney disease: do not take additional magnesium without your GP's agreement, as impaired kidney function can lead to magnesium build-upup.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: check with your pharmacist or midwife before starting.
- EFSA sets an upper level of 250mg of supplemental elemental magnesium per day. MAG365 gives up to 375mg, which is a common and well-tolerated working dose. Start low and build up.
- Keep in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.
- Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet.
