    Why La-5 & BB-12 Were Chosen

    Not all probiotics are equal. The two strains in BioActive Culture, Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12, are among the most studied probiotic strains in the world.

    How Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5® Works

    La-5® is a lactic acid bacteria strain that helps populate the gut and create a more favourable gut environment. It survives stomach acid and bile, reaches the intestine, and can attach to the gut lining. There it produces lactic acid, which lowers gut pH and makes the environment less favourable for unwanted microbes. It also competes for space and nutrients on the gut wall.

    Pathway and chemicals:

    La-5® survives stomach acid and bile, then reaches the intestine where it can attach to the gut lining, also called epithelial cells. Once there, it ferments sugars and produces lactic acid. Lactic acid lowers the gut pH, making the environment more acidic and less comfortable for unwanted microbes. It has the added benefit of competing with other microbes (the bad guys) for space and nutrients, so it helps crowd the gut with useful bacteria.

    It can also “talk” to the gut immune system. The gut lining contains immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages, which monitor what is happening in the intestine. Macrophages are “big eater” cells. They swallow bacteria, debris and damaged material. Dendritic cells are “messenger” immune cells. They sample what is in the gut and show pieces of it to other immune cells, especially T-cells.

    La-5® may influence cytokines, which are immune messenger chemicals. The key ones are IL-10, which is more calming, and TNF-alpha, which is linked with inflammatory signalling.

    Simple Mechanism of action

    So the simple pathway is: La-5® reaches the gut, attaches to epithelial cells, produces lactic acid, lowers pH, competes with unwanted microbes and interacts with immune-signalling chemicals.

    How Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12® Works

    BB-12® is one of the best-studied probiotic strains and is linked with gut barrier function, bowel regularity and gut immune activity. Reviews describe BB-12® mechanisms including pathogen inhibition, gut barrier effects and immune interactions.

    Pathway and chemicals:

    The main pathway is fermentation and gut-barrier signalling. BB-12® breaks down certain carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids such as acetate, propionate and butyrate. These acids help lower gut pH, feed colon cells, and influence tight junction proteins such as occludin and claudins, which help keep the gut lining tight.

    BB-12® can also interact with immune cells in the gut, including dendritic cells and macrophages, and may influence cytokines such as IL-10, IL-12, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma.

    It also helps crowd the gut with useful bacteria and so competes with "bad bacteria" for resources and space.

    Does BioActive Culture need to be refrigerated?

    No. The gel matrix and manufacturing process mean the capsules are shelf-stable at room temperature, which is a practical advantage for travel and everyday use.

    When should I take a probiotic?

    With or just before food so the bacteria travel through the stomach with meal content. Many people take it at breakfast for consistency.

    Can I take it while on antibiotics?

    Yes. Take the probiotic at least 2 hours apart from the antibiotic dose so the antibiotic does not kill the probiotic bacteria. Continue for 1 to 2 weeks after finishing the antibiotic course for recovery.

    How is this different from a yogurt drink?

    Yogurt drinks contain live cultures but usually at lower counts and with different strains not matched to specific clinical evidence. BioActive Culture delivers 4 billion CFU of clinically studied strains in a protected enteric format.

    Can I take it long-term?
