Vermox oral suspension is a medicine used to treat threadworms (pinworms) and other common worm infections, such as whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm. It contains the active ingredient mebendazole, which is an anthelmintic drug that kills worms by interfering with their ability to absorb glucose.

Vermox oral suspension is for adults and children over 2 years of age. The usual dose is 5 ml (one dosing cup) once a day for three consecutive days. For threadworm infection, a single dose is usually sufficient.

Vermox oral suspension is generally well tolerated, but some people may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take Vermox oral suspension without first talking to your doctor.

Here are some other useful information about Vermox oral suspension:

Vermox oral suspension is available over-the-counter in Ireland.

You should not take Vermox oral suspension if you are allergic to mebendazole or any of the other ingredients.

Keep Vermox oral suspension out of reach of children.

    What worms will Vermox treat?

    ·            Threadworm (pinworm) (enterobiasis).

    ·            Roundworm (ascariasis).

    ·            Hookworm

    ·            Whipworm (trichuriasis).

Vermox can be used from 2 years of age.

    How Vermox works?

    Vermox tablets contains mebendazole.

Mebendazole stops worms absorbing sugar, this results in the worms dying. This kills the worms off over a couple of days. These dead worms pass through the bowel and out of the body.

While mebendazole kills adult worms they eggs remain and the follow up hygiene regime is essential to stop reinfection It reoccurs because children are notorious for not washing their hands and when they eat (after scratching themselves) they ingest eggs and the lifecycle of the worms starts all over again. In order to prevent re infestation it is essential that:

    ·         Hands are washed (with warm water and soap) and finger nails are cleaned properly after using the toilet

    ·            keeping fingernails short and clean and avoiding biting your nails or sucking fingers

    ·         underwear or pyjamas are worn in bed (so that bottoms are not scratched when asleep)

    ·            you shower in the morning during treatment so that eggs that were laid around the anus at night are washed away. Pay particular attention to cleaning the anal area
