What is Voltarol (diclofenac) Emugel ?
Voltarol (diclofenac) Emugel concentrates relief deep in the joint to fight pain & inflammation all day long. Diclac is the generic medicine of Voltarol gel
It contains the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), diclofenac with Emugel.
Diclofenac works to relief pain & decrease swelling. On a technical level the gel works by blocking production of some of the body’s pain& swelling causing chemicals. These chemicals are called cyclo-oxygenase (COX).
The Emulgel technology helps the gel to penetrate deeply into the skin to get the diclofenac to the site of the pain. It also has a moisturising effect & cooling effect which eases the painful & red areas of the body.
Voltarol Emulgel is non-greasy, easily absorbed gel with no strong odour meaning it is pleasant and easy to use.
Can You take ibuprofen with Voltarol (diclofenac) Emugel?
You should not use any other medicines that contain diclofenac while you are using this gel. You should also avoid taking other NSAIDs by mouth, for example ibuprofen, while you are using this gel, as this may increase the risk of side effects. Only take other NSAIDs if advised to by your doctor.
Can you take Voltarol & paracetamol together?
It's fine to take paracetamol (Panadol, Solpadeine) with diclofenac.
How quickly does voltarol Emugel work?
If you're using diclofenac gel it usually takes 1 to 2 days to work fully. For arthritis, you may need to use the gel for up to 7 days for its full effect. While you will get almost immediate pain relief with Voltarol emugel using Voltarol Emugel 3 to 4 times a day builds a reservoir of the active ingredient diclofenac in your skin which provides a sustained source of diclofenac. Essentially the longer you use it the smoother its pain killer action and the less breaktrough pain you are likely to feel.
How to Use Voltarol (diclofenac) Emugel ?
The amount of gel needed will vary depending upon the size treated. Apply 3 or 4 times a day unless your pharmacist tells you otherwise. Always allow 4 hours between applications. Do not use more than 4 times in a 24 hour time period. Gently rub or massage the gel into the skin around painful or swollen area of your skin.
Voltarol Emulgel must only be applied to healthy skin & it should not be rubbed into irritated skin, open wounds, infections, open injuries or any other area where the skin is abnormal. Voltarol Emulgel P 1% w/w Gel should not be used with air-tight or water-tight dressings.
When Not to use Voltarol (diclofenac) Emugel
· Do not use the gel for longer than 7 days unless recommended by your doctor.
· Consult your doctor if pain & swelling do not improve in 7 days of use.
· The gel is not recommended for use in children under 14 years of age.
- Do not use the gel if you are allergic to diclofenac, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, butylhydroxy toluene or any of the other ingredients
- Do not use the gel if You are pregnant
- Do not use the gel if You have ever had an asthma attack or allergic reaction after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs such as diclofenac or ibuprofen
