Most D3 supplements use lanolin from sheep’s wool. Sweet Cures sources D3 from lichen which is Vegan.
These Vegan Vitamin D3 softgel capsules deliver 2000IU (50 micrograms) of lichen-sourced cholecalciferol in a vegan softgel made with organic extra virgin olive oil. Each capsule provides two ingredients only: D3 from lichen and olive oil as a carrier. The softgel shell uses hydroxypropyl starch and vegetable glycerine instead of animal-derived gelatin. Free from all 14 FSA allergens, including gluten, dairy, soya, and nuts.
Made in York, UK. The packaging is entirely plastic-free, using recyclable glass bottles and aluminium lids. 90 capsules provide a full three-month supply.
Vegan Vitamin D3 From Lichen
Most D3 supplements use lanolin from sheep’s wool. Sweet Cures sources D3 from lichen, a plant-like organism, giving vegans access to the more effective form. D3 (cholecalciferol) is 87% more effective than D2 (ergocalciferol) at raising and maintaining blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. It has a longer half-life, meaning each dose sustains your levels for longer.
Lichen-derived D3 is chemically identical to the D3 produced in your skin from sunlight and to lanolin-derived D3. The only difference is the source.
How Much Vitamin D Should I Take in Ireland?
The FSAI recommends 400IU for the general adult population. Clinical guidelines increasingly suggest 1000-2000IU for adults over 50, those with limited sun exposure, darker skin, or known insufficiency. At 2000IU, this product sits at the dose most commonly recommended by practitioners for meaningful correction and maintenance. It remains within the 4000IU EFSA tolerable upper limit. Ireland sits between 51° and 55° north.
From October to March, UVB radiation is too weak for skin synthesis. Even in summer, SPF 30 blocks 97% of the UVB that produces vitamin D. The typical Irish diet provides only 120-200IU per day.
Vegan D3 for Bones & Calcium Absorption
Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. Without adequate vitamin D, calcium from food or supplements passes through the gut largely unabsorbed. This is especially relevant for adults over 50, postmenopausal women, and anyone with a family history of osteoporosis. Vitamin D also contributes to normal muscle function, which helps reduce the risk of falls in older adults.
Vegan Vitamin D3 2000IU for Immunity & Energy
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system. In Ireland, winter is when vitamin D levels and immune defences drop together. Correcting deficiencies reduces the frequency and severity of respiratory infections. If you feel persistently tired, run down, or catch every cold going around through autumn and winter, low vitamin D is one of the first things worth checking.
Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms
People with low vitamin D do not say they are deficient. They say they are exhausted, their joints ache, they keep catching colds, or they cannot shake a low mood. Common signs include:
· Persistent tiredness that does not improve with rest
· Muscle weakness, especially in the legs and lower back
· Bone pain and aching joints, often dismissed as age
· Frequent colds, chest infections, and slow recovery
· Low mood, irritability, and seasonal depression
· Hair thinning, brain fog, and poor concentration
Vitamin D Deficiency Medications
- The most commonly dispensed medications in Ireland, metformin, SSRIs, statins, blood pressure tablets, and Eltroxin, are collected by patients who are frequently also low in vitamin D. The symptoms overlap: fatigue, mood changes, aches.
- Insulin resistance worsens with deficiency. Vitamin D receptors sit in mood-regulating brain areas. Obesity traps vitamin D in fat tissue, requiring higher doses.
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is strongly linked to low levels.
- People with psoriasis spend heavily on Dovobet, which contains a synthetic vitamin D analogue, without realising that adequate internal levels can complement their topical treatment.
An inexpensive daily capsule is worth discussing with your pharmacist.
Why Olive Oil as a Vitamin D Carrier?
Vitamin D is fat-soluble and requires dietary fat for absorption. Sweet Cures uses organic extra virgin olive oil as the sole carrier, providing a high-quality fat that aids absorption without the need for additional excipients. Many softgels use soybean oil or sunflower oil. Olive oil is a premium alternative that is free from common allergens and provides naturally occurring polyphenols. The result is a two-ingredient capsule with nothing unnecessary.
Take one softgel capsule daily with food. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and absorbs better alongside a meal containing fats, though the olive oil base already provides some. Morning or midday is generally preferred. Some people find vitamin D taken late in the day can disrupt sleep.
Should I Take Vitamin D3 2000IU with K2?
At 2000IU, adding a K2 supplement is a sensible choice, particularly if you also take calcium supplements. Vitamin K2 (MK-7 form) activates proteins that direct calcium into bones and teeth and away from soft tissues and arteries. If you eat plenty of fermented foods, dairy, and leafy greens, you may get enough K2 from diet alone.
Supplements to Take With Vitamin D3?
· Vitamin K2 (MK-7): directs calcium to bones, most important at higher D3 doses
· Magnesium: required for the enzymes that convert vitamin D to its active form
· Calcium: D3 increases absorption, but adequate calcium from diet is still needed
· Omega-3: fat-soluble, often deficient alongside D, complementary benefits
What Lowers Your Vitamin D Levels?
· Indoor lifestyle, office or shift work
· SPF 30 blocks 97% of vitamin D-producing UVB
· Age: skin production drops 75% by age 65
· Obesity: vitamin D trapped in fat tissue, higher doses needed
· Medications: corticosteroids, anticonvulsants, orlistat, PPIs
· Gut conditions: coeliac, Crohn’s, post-bariatric surgery
· Darker skin: melanin reduces UVB absorption
· Winter in Ireland: no UVB October to March
Can You Take Too Much Vitamin D?
At 2000IU, you are within safe limits. The EFSA upper level is 4000IU daily for adults. You could take two capsules and still be at the upper limit. Toxicity occurs at sustained intakes well above 10,000IU. Do not combine with other vitamin D products without calculating total intake. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and does accumulate.
Vitamin D Drug Interactions
· Thiazide diuretics: can raise blood calcium alongside vitamin D
· Digoxin: elevated calcium increases heart rhythm risk
· Anticonvulsants: increase liver breakdown of vitamin D
· Orlistat: blocks fat absorption, separate by 2 hours
· Statins: mild interaction with vitamin D metabolism
Speak to your pharmacist before starting if you take regular medication.
How Long Does Vitamin D Take to Work?
Blood levels reach a new steady state in 6-8 weeks. Energy and mood improvements typically appear within 4-8 weeks. Bone density builds over 6-12 months. If severely deficient, you may notice improvements within 2-4 weeks. Daily dosing is more effective than sporadic use.
FAQs: Sweet Cures Vegan Vitamin D3
Is 2000IU Vitamin D Safe to Take Every Day?
Yes. The EFSA upper limit is 4000IU daily for adults. At 2000IU you are at half that limit and well within safe range for long-term daily use.
Why Is Vitamin D Deficiency So Common in Ireland?
Ireland’s latitude means no UVB for skin synthesis six months of the year. Food provides only 120-200IU daily. There is no mandatory food fortification. SPF blocks production year-round. 47% of Irish adults are insufficient in winter.
Is Sweet Cures Vegan D3 Free From All Allergens?
Yes. This product is certified free from all 14 FSA allergens, including gluten, dairy, soya, nuts, sesame, eggs, fish, shellfish, celery, mustard, lupin, sulphites, and molluscs. It is one of the cleanest vitamin D products available.
What Makes the Softgel Shell Vegan?
The shell uses hydroxypropyl starch gel and vegetable glycerine instead of animal-derived gelatine. This produces a soft capsule that dissolves easily without any animal ingredients.
Does Vitamin D Help With Depression and SAD?
Probably. Vitamin D receptors are concentrated in mood-regulating brain areas. Deficiency is linked to seasonal affective disorder, particularly in Ireland where sunlight and D levels drop together in winter. Correcting a deficiency can improve mood alongside existing treatment.
Can I Get Enough Vitamin D From Food in Ireland?
Unlikely. Oily fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy are the main sources, but the typical Irish diet provides only 3-5mcg per day. You would need 2-3 portions of oily fish daily to reach even 1000IU.
Is the Packaging Recyclable?
Yes. Sweet Cures uses entirely plastic-free packaging. The bottles are recyclable glass with aluminium lids. No plastic wrap, no plastic inserts.
Do I Need Vitamin D in Summer in Ireland?
Many people do. Production requires 15-20 minutes of midday sun on bare skin without sunscreen. If you work indoors, apply SPF, or have darker skin, year-round supplementation is sensible.
Safety Information: Sweet Cures Vit D3
Vitamin D is safe at recommended doses. People with sarcoidosis, some lymphomas, or hyperparathyroidism should consult their doctor. The HSE recommends vitamin D for pregnant and breastfeeding women. If taking more than 2000IU daily, periodic blood testing is sensible.
